World of Warcraft: Forever opens a new chapter for players who value Azeroth exploration, character development, and companionship along the way as much as the final raid. At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard presented a separate WoW experience with new areas, quests and systems, set in the world of the original game. The official launch date is November 4, 2026, while the beginning of the beta is announced for September 17. Blizzard – announcement
The announcement also raises very practical questions: how close is Forever to Classic, what changes for existing classes, is the subscription sufficient, and why is the new Skyborne race separated into additional packages?

What is WoW Forever and where does it fit into the Warcraft story?
Forever is intended as a long-term supported experience alongside modern World of Warcraft and Classic. The starting point is the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, with progression up to level 60. In the timeline, it is after Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core. Blizzard – announcement
Hence the comparison with the idea of "Classic+": a recognizable Azeroth that gets new content. Blizzard, however, presents Forever as a full new game rather than a season or temporary mode. The announced principles include the absence of flying mounts and automatic adjustment of the level of the enemy to the player. Blizzard – What's Next
Such a choice has a clear consequence: travel, risk assessment and cooperation should remain important even between major battles. The value of Forever will therefore not depend only on the amount of endgame content, but also on how interesting the path to it is.
New areas and over a thousand additional quests
Blizzard is announcing more than 1.000 new quests spread across the development from level 1 to 60. Among the areas featured are Mount Hyjal, Shen'dralas, Riverglades, and Zephras Isle. Blizzard – content overview
Mount Hyjal deals with the aftermath of the battle against Archimonde. Shen'dralas opens up space for stories related to Eldre'Thalas and its inhabitants, while Riverglades brings a new realm between familiar parts of the Eastern Kingdoms. Blizzard describes it as an area roughly the size of Stranglethorn Vale, with nearly 200 quests for the Horde and Alliance. Blizzard – Found Photos

Riverglades is intended to be a significant part of the progression from mid-thirties to mid-forties. Zephras Isle, in contrast, is an introductory adventure from first to 12th levels for a new race. Blizzard – new areas
New shipping routes should also connect the world. Among them are Stormwind Harbor - Auberdine and the link from Tanaris to Riverglades. Blizzard's intention is to make it easy to meet friends, but preserve the feeling of distance and real travel. Blizzard – Journey through Azeroth

Skyborne: a new race for both factions, with an important entry requirement
The Skyborne, also known as the shen'dorei, trace their origins to escapees from Eldre'Thalas who found refuge in the Skywall. Their island of Zephras faces a crisis after the disappearance of the elemental protectors. Blizzard – the history of Skyborne
Belonging to Horde or Alliance is chosen during character creation. Both sides have access to the Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, and Druid classes. Skyborne Hordes can additionally be Shamans, and Skyborne Alliances Mages. Special druid forms for this race are also introduced. Blizzard – Skyborne

Access to Forever itself is included in a WoW subscription or Game Time. However, Blizzard lists access to the Skyborne race and the starting Zephras Isle experience as a benefit of the additional Skyborne Heroic Pack and its higher versions. This should be distinguished from the basic approach to the game. Blizzard – packages and access

Nine new dungeons, raids and 15v15 PvP
Nine new dungeons have been announced. Their selection shows how much the development relies on places that are already part of the Warcraft world:
- Hall of Thanes, below Ironforge;
- Ruins of Lordaeron;
- new site above Whelgar's Excavation;
- City of Dalaran;
- Blackmaw Hold;
- Drowned City;
- Krol'dok Stronghold;
- Alcaz Prison;
- Shaper's Terrace.
For raid teams, Barrow Deeps for ten players and Hyjal Summit for twenty players are introduced. In the announced calendar, the unlocking of new raids is planned for December 9, 2026. PvP gets Darkspear Islands, a battleground with 15 players on two sides, based on capturing and defending strategic points. Blizzard – dungeons, raids and development plan

For organized communities, the gap between launching and opening raids is especially important. This layout leaves room for character development, professions and group composition before the first major check in the final content.
Six new race and class combinations
In addition to Skyborne, existing races get six new combinations: Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin. The last one is directly related to the story of the Forsaken Kingdom campaign: former paladins search for their place among the Forsaken and the meaning of using the Light after death. Blizzard – classes, Blizzard – Forsaken paladins
The changes don't end at class availability. A paladin, for example, gains Holy Strike at sixth level and Consecration as a base ability at twentieth. Seal of Fury gives tanking an important tool: Judgment functions as a taunt while that Seal is active. Blizzard – Deep Dive
Blizzard emphasizes preserving class distinctions. The paladin gets new options, but he doesn't get a complete set of answers to every situation. This is an important distinction for players who appreciate the distinctive strengths and weaknesses of each class in Classic.

Camping and professions give you a reason to stop in the world
Camping expands the former Cooking Fire into a gathering place. A basic camp can hold up to three special items added by players, while more advanced campfires can hold five or ten. Items from professions offer bonuses and practical benefits, including repairs and workstations. To gain the Camping buff, you need to rest briefly by the fire. Blizzard – Camping
More than 600 new recipes have been announced across different professions and levels. The design idea is interesting because the usefulness of the craftsman becomes visible outside the capital: a contribution to the camp can help the group before the next expedition. The success of this system will depend on whether the players will spontaneously use the camps or see them as another obligation before the fight.
Legacy: A progression that connects multiple characters
The Legacy system rewards the development of additional characters and the achievement of challenges. The points are shared, but each character distributes them separately through the Professions, Adventure and Resourcefulness trees. Among the benefits presented are a better rested experience and more collected materials. Blizzard – Legacy
At launch, it is planned to spend a maximum of 16 points per character, with the possibility of winning up to 65 points. Additional achievements contribute to a special line of cosmetic and prestigious awards. Therefore, the number of points won and the number of points used at the same time are not the same. The spending limit is meant to ease the pressure on new players and the need to complete all challenges immediately. Blizzard – Legacy restrictions
Without the classic choice of realm, but with separate rules
Forever introduces an approach that Blizzard calls "realmless". Players choose Normal, PvP, or Roleplaying rules, while Hardcore is planned for post-launch. This does not mean that everyone plays together without restrictions: grouping between different rules is not supported, and Horde and Alliance remain separate. Blizzard – servers and communities
Characters get two-part names, unique by region, and players can choose a language preference. For a team planning to start together, that's why faction agreement and rules are still key. The technical change reduces the importance of choosing an individual realm, but does not remove the need for this agreement.
Graphic selection, transmog and controller
Modern and Classic visual presets, choice of HD or SD character models, Classic animations for HD models and official controller support are presented. The environment gets improved rendering of water, fog and lighting. Blizzard - visual and control options
Transmogrification, i.e. changing the appearance of equipment, can be turned off. The player who turns it off sees the gear that others are actually wearing. With the corresponding green and blue bind-on-pickup items from the dungeon, all players who meet the loot requirements get the appearance; with epic raid items, it is attached to whoever the item belongs to. With this, Blizzard tries to reduce the conflict between the need for better equipment and the collection of looks. Blizzard – transmog

What will decide whether the return was successful?
Forever has a clear direction: more reasons to stay in the original Azeroth, develop more characters and create a community during the game. The new dungeons and areas are attracting attention, but systems like camping, professions, and player bonding could have a stronger impact on the day-to-day experience.
The biggest challenge will be balance. If additional systems become a must-do list, they can strain the very simplicity that Blizzard wants to preserve. If they make useful choices without being overly pressured, Forever can offer a good reason for a fresh start for both veterans and players new to WoW.
It's too early to make a final assessment before testing and launch. What is already clear from the plans presented is the scope of the ambition: to expand the experience of the original world so that it is once again interesting to discover.
