LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight shined at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025 because, let's face it, LEGO and Batman are proven dopamine-inducing word combinations. But beneath the applause and the movie announcement, there is a surprise that is already causing debate: only seven playable characters at the start.

Yes, seven. For a franchise that built its identity on an overabundance of minifigures and fan-service collecting frenzy, this isn't just modest, this is radical. The confirmed roster includes Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Jim Gordon, Catwoman and Talia al Ghul. Villains like the Joker, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Ra's al Ghul and Bane are present, but only as opponents. There is no free play. No unlocking. No chaos in co-op mode.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is expected in 2026.

Compared to LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, which offered over 300 playable characters, this comes as a shock. TT Games is clearly trying to course-correct after that rambling project by replacing quantity with depth. The FAQ hints at unique mechanics: Batman's grapnel, Catwoman's whip, Gordon's spray. If each hero has a specific role to play in solving puzzles and fighting, this could be a focused, authored campaign. Sincerely? Mastering Batman's complete move set sounds much more satisfying than flying over 200 similar images or whales.

But the risk is obvious. LEGO games live off that dopamine cycle: unlock, experiment, repeat. Seven characters can break that vicious cycle unless the suit variants make significant changes to the gameplay. If they're just cosmetic, the Bat-shelf will seem empty.

There is also a DLC elephant in the Batcave. LEGO games have previously relied on character packs, but launching with seven immediately raises doubts about a possible "pay to play" model. The "quality over quantity" message only works if it's not accompanied by a "checkout" screen for the rest of the Bat-family.

Still, there is potential. A curated Gotham story can bring smarter puzzles, better pacing, and more challenging boss fights. Facing the Joker, Penguin and Bane in carefully designed skirmishes? That sounds more exciting than unlocking them and never using them.

So, the question is simple: What ti What do you expect from LEGO Batman 2026? If filling the grid with hundreds of minifigures is your thing, prepare to be disappointed. But if you want a polished co-op campaign with real ability synergy and a high level of replayability, this modest lineup might be just the Bat-twist the series needs.
