Ghost of Yotei not just a sequel, but a spiritual successor Ghost of Tsushima which boldly changes the tone, setting and protagonist. Set three hundred years later on the mystical island of Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), the game replaces the historical drama of Ghost of Tsushima for an introspective, spiritual journey. Male, a wandering ronin haunted by visions and revenge, takes us through a story that deals as much with internal demons as with external enemies.

Borba

The combat within the game is masterfully designed. Building on the fluid mechanics of its predecessor, the game introduces:

  • Double fighting poses: Switching between katana and wakizashi mid-fight brings devastating effects. Wakizashi is a shorter samurai sword. Together with the katana, it forms a daisho
  • Elemental amulets: Effects of fire, ice and wind add tactical depth, especially in fights against main opponents or bosses.
  • Spiritual duels: Ethereal struggles that test time and determination, often associated with Atsu's emotional state.

The game rewards patience and precision. Random button-mashing is punished, while mastery in parrying, feinting, and using terrain is rewarded. The use of elements in the game is a big plus for me because it really adds a whole new level of strategy when it comes to combat.

Atmosphere

Ezo is a true revelation. Snow-capped forests, volcanic cliffs, and spirit-infused shrines create a landscape that feels alive and sacred. Key features include:

  • Dynamic time: Snowstorms or blizzards affect visibility and stealth.
  • Vertical movement: Climbing hooks, cliff scaling and shrine ascents also add a vertical dimension.
  • Spiritual realms: Optional zones accessible through meditation, offering puzzles and deep mythology. Within these zones, the player has the opportunity to get to know the protagonist better, Atsu.

The world was not created for conquest, but for connection. Atsu's The journey is reflected in the changing moods of nature.

Narration/Lore

Atsu's the search for the Yotei Six, the former allies who betrayed him, is deeply personal. Each antagonist represents a fragment of his broken psyche:

  • The whisperer: Manipulation and guilt.
  • Keeper of the Flame: Anger and loss.
  • Empty Monk: Faith and doubt.

Flashbacks, hallucinations and encounters with ghosts blur the line between reality and memory. The narrative is non-linear, inviting the player to put the pieces together themselves Atsu's of the past through research and dialogue. This gives the game extra replay value and a reason to do side missions within the game.

Audio

The soundtrack combines traditional instruments such as shamisen i taiko drums with ambient spiritual tones. The voice acting is outstanding, especially in Japanese. The Croatian localization manages to preserve the poetic rhythm of the original, although some idiomatic phrases are lost in translation.

Secondary Content and Systems

  • Zeni Hajiki: A strategy mini-game with a coin toss, with regional tournaments. It is a classic gambling game of that period. Given the scarce economy this is the primary way to collect money in the game; except for the "wanted" poster, of course.
  • The Temptations of the Sanctuary: Riddles related to Atsu's virtues. These are ancient temples (shrines) located on the tops of mountains. In order for the player to climb to the top, it is first necessary to find the base of the mountain suitable for climbing, and then to have the necessary equipment (the previously mentioned hooks, ropes, etc.).
  • Camp Construction: Recruiting allies, crafting equipment and forming a base of operations. To conquer a camp you need to take it from the Yotei Six by eliminating all their warriors in that area. There are 22 camps in total.

These systems enrich the world without disrupting the main narrative line.

Ghost of Yotei is only available on Play Station 5 gaming console. There are rumors that a PC version is already being prepared, but in my opinion it should not be expected before 2027.

Conclusion

Ghost of Yotei is a bold evolution. It replaces the epic war story from Tsushima for a quieter, more introspective narrative. The combat is more precise, the world is more mystical, and the story is fragmented, but on purpose. The game requires emotional commitment and rewards it with a sense of fulfillment.

Evaluation za Ghost of Yotei je 9.
