When it is Code Vein launched in 2019, it took a special place as a stylish, anime-inspired soulslike that introduced many players to the genre. Now its sequel, Code Vein 2, arrives with grand ambitions: an open world, a time-travel narrative, and expanded combat systems. But while the game promises freedom and innovation, its technical shortcomings threaten to overshadow all its virtues.

The world divided by eras

Story Code Vein 2 takes place through two timelines. In the future, humanity and the Revenants teeter on the brink of collapse, haunted by monstrous Horrors created by a threat known as Luna Rapacis. Players take on the role Revenant hunter, who together with the mysterious time traveler Lou travels back in time to rewrite destiny and defeat corrupt heroes.

This narrative across two eras adds depth and a sense of urgency, blending post-apocalyptic horror with high fantasy. The open-world design further enhances immersion, offering players the freedom to explore objectives of their own choosing, whether riding a motorbike through desolate landscapes or exploring caves filled with horrors.

Borba

Like its predecessor, Code Vein 2 It requires patience and precision. Enemy movements must be read carefully, counterattacks must be timed perfectly, and survival depends on the ability to adapt.

The arsenal now includes seven weapons, among which stands out rune blade, a striking addition that uses two floating swords for stylish combos. New systems expand the possibilities of building characters through Bequeathed Forms (special purpose weapons) and shields which redefine the mechanics of defense. Together, they provide more tactical options, ensuring players aren't trapped in rigid builds.

Companions, a controversial feature of the original, have now been redesigned. Players can choose between traditional AI support with limited healing or a solo assimilation mode, which provides benefits without trivializing the game's difficulty. It's a smart solution that balances accessibility and challenge.

Performance problems

Unfortunately, the game's most dangerous enemy isn't Horror, but optimization. Even on hardware above the recommended specs, players are reporting serious frame drops, stutters during cutscenes, and performance drops caused by simple rain effects.

Enabling DLSS alleviates some of the issues, but they still remain. For a genre that relies on quick reactions, technical instability undermines the very basis of the experience. As one player said: "If the game itself becomes the main obstacle preventing us from playing it properly, then we can't be blamed for becoming frustrated."

First impressions

Despite the flaws, Code Vein 2 shines when its systems work as intended. The open-world exploration feels liberating, the combat is layered and rewarding, and the atmosphere conveys a sense of loneliness and dread without relying on narrow corridors.

However, the excitement of returning to this beloved series is tempered by frustration. For fans who adored the original, the sequel offers tantalizing hints of greatness, but until the optimization issues are ironed out, it risks alienating the very audience that Code Vein made it a cult favorite.

Code Vein 2 is a bold sequel that expands the soulslike formula with freedom and innovation. But unless the technical flaws are patched up, it remains an imperfect gem, brilliant in concept but compromised in execution.

Waiting for the final grade

For now, Code Vein 2 remains an unfinished experience in the eyes of its most dedicated fans. After half a decade of waiting, many, including myself, want to slowly enjoy the journey before giving a final assessment.

First impressions are promising: combat is engaging, exploration is liberating, and expanded systems add welcome depth. Still, concerns remain. The character designs sometimes veer into weird, distracting proportions, while the time travel mechanics feel detached from the rest of the series, especially when compared to the Bandai Namco universe. God Eater.

In the end, the biggest hurdle is still performance. If Bandai Namco doesn't fix the optimization before the official release, the game risks stumbling at the very start. But if the problems are solved, Code Vein 2 could become one of the boldest soulslike sequels in recent gaming history.
