Independent titles often manage to deliver unique and innovative experiences, often exceeding expectations even in competition with big-budget games. Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree, a new action role-playing game (ARPG) from the studio Primal Game Studio, tries to do just that, combining Metroidvania design, Soulslike mechanics and dark fantasy inspired by legendary series like Castlevania i BerserkerThe game is an ambitious title that strives to merge classic elements with fresh ideas.

But how much Mandrake manages to combine these influences into a unique and coherent experience? Can it really bring something new to the genre, or is it just another game that draws inspiration from familiar formulas?
A world of darkness and chaos
The game is set in a fantasy realm. Faelduuma, a place that was once peaceful and stable, but is now under constant threat from chaotic forces emanating from a parallel plane known as Entropy. These cracks in reality allow dark beings to infiltrate the world of the living, bringing fear, destruction and unpredictable consequences. As Inquisitor, the player faces these threats and embarks on a journey to stop the advance of darkness.

One of the interesting features of the game is its interactive narrative. According to Brian Mitsoda, known for his work on Vampires: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (one of my favorite games), players won't have a static story that forces them to make certain decisions. Instead, through dialogue options and choice mechanics, the game allows players to shape the Inquisitor's identity, customizing how the story unfolds. This approach not only contributes to greater relatability to the character, but also opens up the possibility for different endings, which greatly increases the replay value.

With a more deeply developed lore and storytelling system, Mandrake is positioned as a game that does not only rely on action, but also strives to provide players with an intriguing story full of mystery and choices.
Combat and gameplay
Fighting in Mandrakes relies on classic Soulslike elements, so players will have to think tactically and precisely time their attacks. Quick and light strikes, powerful attacks, blocking, dodging and stamina management become key elements in encounters with enemies.

As in other games of this type, opponents have different behavior patterns, which means that players will have to adapt their playstyle to effectively defeat them. This is helped by a very well-developed talent and magic tree that highlights the uniqueness of the player despite the class he has chosen for the game. Of course, there is also the equipment that the Inquisitor collects during his adventure. Equipment is a very important detail because depending on the chosen class, some items are significantly more useful than others.

At the same time Mandrake It also offers some flexibility. The difficulty system allows players to adjust the health of enemies, the damage they deal, and their character's stamina anywhere between 70% and 100%. This option can help those who are not used to the punishing combat characteristic of Souls-like games, while at the same time not breaking the core mechanics for those looking for a real challenge.
In addition, the game allows you to choose between six different classes:
– Vanguard – Close combat in heavy armor.
– Spellbinder(Mag) – Commands chaos magic.
– Flameweaver – Fire is his main weapon
– Nightshade – A silent assassin who uses daggers
– Vindicator – A warrior who uses armor and faith to protect others from evil
– Wyldwarden (Guardian of Nature) – A druid who uses nature to defeat his opponents.

Each class has a unique playstyle, and they differ in weapons, armor, and special abilities, providing a wide range of strategies and opportunities for experimentation.
Atmosphere within the game
Mandrake is visually rich and carefully designed. The game world consists of more than 75 different locations, from dense forests, deserts and mountains to dark caves, magnificent cityscapes and dangerous swamps. Each location is designed to feel believable and immersive, with a carefully crafted atmosphere that further contributes to the narrative tone of the game.

When it comes to audio components, Mandrake stands out with an impressive composition composed by Hristos Antoni (Septicflesh), while FILMharmonican orchestra from Prague contributed to the musical arrangement of the game. Additionally, the game includes full English dubbing, which adds to the quality of presentation and narrative depth.

The main campaign lasts around 40 hours, with additional content for those who want to explore every corner Faelduuma. This means that the game offers a rich experience, which can be even longer for players inclined to explore and take on additional challenges.
